Skeletal Class II malocclusions with a hyperdivergent growth pattern pose a significant clinical challenge to the orthodontist specially when the patient demands a significant improvement with a non-surgical treatment plan. Skeletal anchorage with temporary anchorage devices (TADs) has indeed proven to be a boon in such cases as they can bring about orthognathic like orthodontic treatment results. This presentation aims to discuss the diagnosis and management of such cases with a clear enunciation of the thought process in the decision making of the various clinical steps based on sound biomechanics, orthodontic principles and biological limitations amply illustrated by clinical patient cases. This presentation underscores the importance of TADs as a useful armamentarium for the orthodontist in truly expanding the envelope of discrepancies treatable with non-surgical modalities through a showcase of treatment possibilities.
Learning Objectives:
- Challenges in treating Hyperdivergent Class II Malocclusions
- Factors to maximize facial profile improvement in non surgical treatment of hyperdivergent Class II malocclusions
- Biomechanical considerations in use of skeletal anchorage for effective treatment of hyperdivergent malocclusions
